The Randolph Lady Cougars kicked off their season with a nail-biting 18-17 victory over George Washington in a game that had fans on the edge of their seats. The season opener, played on home turf, was an offensive showcase, with both teams battling back and forth until the Lady Cougars finally emerged victorious in the final inning.
Junior starting pitcher Gaza went the distance for the Lady Cougars, striking out five while showing incredible grit against a powerful Washington lineup. Despite giving up a couple of home runs that temporarily put Washington ahead, Gaza remained composed, helping keep her team in the game.
Defensively, Randolph made some key plays to hold off Washington’s relentless offense. Sophomore first baseman came through with timely defense, securing a couple of crucial outs that prevented Washington from adding to their lead. Meanwhile, third baseman #25 Soto was a defensive anchor, coming up big with two key stops that helped get the Cougars out of jams.
The Lady Cougars’ offense came alive early, but it was Gaza who delivered one of the game’s biggest moments. In the bottom of the fourth, with the bases loaded, Gaza stepped up and smashed a triple, clearing the bases and putting Randolph ahead once again. The crowd erupted as the Lady Cougars gained momentum, but Washington responded in the top of the fifth, reclaiming the lead in what seemed like an endless tug-of-war.
However, the Lady Cougars refused to back down. Their rally began with the second baseman working a crucial walk, setting the stage for a comeback. Catcher Quezada showed her toughness, refusing to be intimidated by Washington’s hard-throwing pitcher. Her patience at the plate paid off, as she drew a walk that put two runners on and rattled the opposing pitcher.
With the game on the line, #25 Soto stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. Despite striking out, the play wasn’t over. The Washington catcher, in an attempt to secure the out, threw to first base—but the ball got away, allowing the Lady Cougars to clear the bases. As the final run crossed the plate, the Randolph dugout erupted in celebration.
It was a statement win for the Lady Cougars, proving their resilience and determination. Their season is off to a thrilling start, and if this game was any indication, fans are in for an exciting year.
